Sketching and Drawing
Incorporate right-brain drawing techniques with basic "learning to look" studio still-life drawing exercises. Learn basic drawing skills with pencil, pen, charcoal, and pastel; develop an understanding of the concepts of contour line, tone, gesture, positive/negative space, form, highlight, contrast and composition. Success is guaranteed even for those who feel they can't draw a straight line. American Art and the Northwest Artist
Understand art criticism and appreciation, develop new vocabulary and learn the principles of art. Discuss comparisons of historical and contemporary American Art & Artist Travel to Eugene and visit the University of Oregon Museum of Art's traveling exhibition of painting by the American artist C.S. Price(1874-1950): Visit the Art & Architecture and Allied Arts Department gallery, EMU Gallery at U of O; Natural History Museum, Native American Art exhibit; Maude Kerns Art Center, Salon des Refuses and Dia de los Muertos exhibit in Eugene. Pine Needle Basketry
Create a pine needle basket and lid or a tray with handles using local ponderosa needles coiled in native tradition. Finishing techniques include different weaving patterns, stitches and embellishments from nature. $8 material fee to instructor at first class.
